Tama Serial Number Lookup
How can I tell the date of manufacture from the serial? This 12' is: 14502197 And lastly, is this the candy apple red? I can't seem to find any pics of this color in the Tama catalogs on the official site. Thanks in advance! Mid to late 1980’s. Solid Lacquer finishes Piano Black, Piano White and Candy Apple Red were introduced to the Tama Superstar line in 1985. In late 1986, the Tama Crestar line (soon to be changed to Granstar) replaced the Superstars.
Hope this helps, let me know!!! Glad to see i'm not crazy!!! Thanx for the info. Andy, I've had exactly the same issue. I have a large SCP drumset (bought new 2 years ago) and most of the drums numbers start with 03. I contacted Tama by mail a few months back about this but never got a reply. (I love Tama to death but their customer service.).

Doug, Your set is from the 90's not 80's the 80's drums would have the pointy lugs on them. Also by the tom size they look to be the power tom size 2' deeper. Not to much unique at all very common Tama set.if the cymbals are top of the line Zild's or something along these lines your set may sell for 600.00 to 700.00 on ebay.Mikey I'm sorry but this is incorrect. I have the exact same drumkit but with more shallow toms. They are from the mid eighties, probably 1984-1986. Colour is Aspen White.
They don't even say what else they make besides Ibanez guitars. Drums are among the smallest amount of their products!

You won't regret it.They are great sounding drums, especially the early 4 ply with rerings. The're cheap enough, save for the super maple finish drums in standard sized, and the 8/10 and 12' toms which are at a premium. But you could still pick up a set in standard sizes usually in mahogany for around 5-700 bucks, depending on condition and location. I would hurry, because they just may become collectable like Ludwig standards and clubdates are becoming.

Cadkey 19 free download pc. Does anybody know what wood was used in a Tama 1986 Swingstar SS8000 series drumset or 1986 Beatstar kits? These kits have a finished interior of natural wood, rather than the standard zola-coat?
My hypothesis was this one: Tama started to build the starclassic line well before they started to be available in 1994. The Starclassic birch line appeared in 1996 (before the Performers) and I thought that maybe some of the shells I have were originally built for the SC birch series way back then. But, since Tama is completely mute on this, we might never know.
My drums also have the accel size so I'm sure they are 100% birch. My hypothesis was this one: Tama started to build the starclassic line well before they started to be available in 1994. I get emails all of the time with a basic drum description and a serial number from visitors in hopes I can unlock the history of their drum. I think in general serial numbers do play an important role in the commercial market especially electronics and other high end items.

Chill man, We were just kidding, Tama is not like most drum companies. There is no information released on their site to account for their in house number system. That is why we were having a bit of fun with your thread. Tama is a small part of a large diversified corporation that doesn't do a good job of communicating with the owners of their products. As a matter of fact, They are down right cold when it comes to customer relations. They are a typical old fashioned Japanese conglomerate.

Anyone here played a Tama Swingstar kit - original series. I believe these are mahogany/maple. Wrapped; fair condition. I'm only interested in a gigging kit just wondering what to expect sound wise. These are MIJ, mid 80's I'd say.
Just go to their site and try to ask them something. Musical instruments are just a small portion of the conglomerates products. They don't even say what else they make besides Ibanez guitars. Drums are among the smallest amount of their products! All communications with them are done by snail mail and you will receive a form letter for an answer. The reply letter will contain nothing that will feel personal to you. They are cold and corporate all the way.
It wasn't a Swingstar--he had his own signature line--but for a tribute band, this would be close enough. I had a white Swingstar kit before I got my Gretsch set. It definitely wasn't a pro-quality kit, but it was a step up from the MIT kit that I started out with, and it served me well as a beginner. With the bottom heads removed, you can get that Phil Collins 'barking' concert tom sound, which is a pretty cool sound if that's your thing.
I have a TAMA Swingstar I need to sell, but I'd like to pinpoint its year and get some more information about it beforehand. I'm pretty sure it's from the 80s, but is there any way you can tell what exact year?

I bet somebody in a Metalica tribute band would snap those up in a heartbeat. I think Lars Ulrich had a kit similar to that in the early 90's Good Luck with them Good call!
I'm not much of a gear junkie so I don't know a whole lot about TAMA drums although I have flipped a couple of 80's Imperialstar kits and I do have a 6.5' KingBeat. The pic above is straight off the CL ad where I found these. I also got the matching snare in Jewel Blue.
